MSU Billings poll reports 9-point lead for Tester

The Montana Poll, produced by academics at Montana State University’s Billings campus, reports Sen. Jon Tester is leading his Republican challenger, state auditor Matt Rosendale, 47 to 38 percent, with 12 percent undecided. Libertarian Rick Breckenridge was favored by three percent.

In the election for the U.S. House, Rep. Greg Gianforte led Democratic challenger Kathleen Williams 44 to 41 percent with 12 percent undecided. Libertarian Elinor Swanson was favored by three percent.

Initiative 185, which raises tobacco taxes and extends expanded Medicaid, was leading 52 to 39 percent, with eight percent undecided.

Legislative Referendum 128, which extends the 6-mil university levy for another ten years, was leading 66 to 11 percent with 22 percent undecided.

President Trump’s net approval rating was plus seven percent, with 49 percent approving, 42 percent disapproving, and nine percent not saying. The poll’s net approval is consistent with other polls.

The sample of 471 likely voters was taken 8–13 October by landline and cell phone. The sampling margin of error is 4.5 percent.

Here’s the latest plot of polls for Tester v. Rosendale. I’ll have a similar plot for Williams v. Gianforte in a day or two.
